The best time to visit the Château des ducs de Bretagne

By hour: the first ninety minutes are the good ones

The moat gardens open at 8am and the courtyard and rampart walk at 8:30am, while the museum does not open until 10am. That gap is the best window on the site and almost nobody uses it. I cross the gardens most mornings on the way into town and there are more joggers than visitors. If you want the wall to yourself, be on it at half past eight. In July and August the other end of the day works too, with the ramparts open until 8pm and the light coming in low across the white tufa.

By season

• July and August — the only stretch when the museum opens seven days a week, and the ramparts stay open to 8pm. The trade-off is that the first-Sunday free entry does not run in these two months.
• Spring and autumn — the first Sunday of the month is free for everyone, and the museum keeps its 10am to 6pm hours. This is when I would come.
• Winter — the museum is an indoor day that works in bad weather, and the ramparts are still free and still open at 8:30am. Watch the closure dates: 1 January, 1 May, 1 November and 25 December, when nothing on the site opens.

The day of the week that catches people out

Monday. Outside July and August the museum is closed and the castle is not, and people who do not know that lose the visit entirely. The exact hours for each part of the site, including the 5:30pm ticket desk cut-off, are on opening hours.

Timing a tour around it

A booked tour is not tied to the museum’s Monday closure, which makes it the sensible Monday move. If you are in town for two or three days and moving around a lot, the City Pass runs 24, 48 or 72 hours or seven days, includes museum admission and unlimited bus, tram and shuttle-boat travel, and its seasonal line-up differs between April to October and October to March. It is priced by duration, so the longer passes cost more overall but less per day, and whether it pays is arithmetic rather than enthusiasm.
